1. The Road Traffic Rules of the Republic of Armenia (hereinafter referred to as the Rules) establish a uniform procedure for road traffic within the territory of the Republic of Armenia. They regulate relations concerning traffic-light and traffic-controller signals; hazard-warning and special signals; the use of vehicles’ external lighting devices and audible warning devices; driving under various conditions; speed regulation; overtaking; stopping and parking; passage through intersections and pedestrian crossings; towing of vehicles; learner driving; transportation of passengers and goods; and signs regulating traffic.

2. Right-hand traffic of vehicles is established on the roads of the Republic of Armenia.

3. The following concepts are used in the Rules:

1) Main road

A road marked with signs 2.1 "Main road", 2.3.1 "Junction with a secondary road", 2.3.2—2.3.7 "Secondary road junction", or 5.1 "Motorway", with respect to a crossing (adjoining) road, or a road with a hard surface (asphalt concrete, cement concrete, stone materials, etc.) with respect to a road with an unpaved surface; or any road with respect to a road exiting from an adjacent area. The presence of a paved section on an unpaved road directly before the intersection does not make that road equivalent to the paved road it crosses.

2) Right of way

The right to travel in the preferred direction with priority over other road users.

3) Must not impede traffic

A requirement addressed to road users, according to which they must not impede traffic in any way: passengers and pedestrians—the traffic of vehicles; and drivers—the traffic of pedestrians and other vehicles.

4) Organized vehicle convoy

A group of at least 3 motor vehicles with their headlights permanently switched on, traveling directly one after the other in the same lane, escorted at the front by a vehicle with blue and red flashing beacons switched on.

5) Start of motion

The moment of starting the movement of a vehicle from a stopping or parking place, with or without an associated change to an adjacent lane.

6) Maneuvering

The start of a vehicle's motion (associated with moving into an adjacent lane), lane change, change of direction of travel, stopping (with a lane change), and reversing.

7) Lane change

Departure from the lane occupied by a vehicle, or from the row occupied within the boundaries of a marked lane, while maintaining the initial direction of travel.

8 ) Change of direction of travel

A change of the previously chosen direction of travel (except for reversing), carried out by means of a turn or U-turn.

9) Turn

A manoeuvre performed by a vehicle in order to enter another road or to leave the road for an adjacent area.

10) U-turn

A manoeuvre performed in order to reverse the vehicle’s direction of travel.

11) Overtaking

Passing one or several vehicles in motion, associated with leaving the occupied lane.

12) Obstacle

A stationary object on any lane of the carriageway (a damaged or faulty vehicle, a foreign object, damage to the road surface, etc.) that deprives drivers of the possibility of continuing to travel in the same lane.

13) Danger to traffic

A situation arising during traffic when, if travel in the same direction and (or) at the same speed continues, a real danger of a road traffic accident will be created.

14) Passing

Passing one or several vehicles in motion without leaving the occupied lane.

15) Dangerous goods

Dangerous substances, raw materials and hazardous waste which, because of their particular properties, may during transportation harm human life or health, pollute the environment, or damage vehicles, buildings or structures.

16) Organized transportation of groups of children

The organised transportation of two or more children of preschool or school age by a motor vehicle, excluding public transport vehicles.

17) Limited visibility

Visibility of the road in the direction of travel from a road user’s position, restricted by vehicles, the road’s geometric characteristics, the terrain, roadside vegetation, structures or other objects.

18) Pedestrian and bicycle path (pedestrian-bicycle path)

A road element (or a separate road) structurally separated from the carriageway, intended for the movement of cyclists separately from pedestrians or jointly with them, and indicated by signs 4.5.2—4.5.7.

19) Lane for cyclists

A lane of the carriageway separated from the rest of the carriageway by horizontal road marking and indicated by sign 5.14.2, intended for the movement of bicycles and mopeds.

20) Hybrid automobile

A vehicle having at least two different energy converters (engines) and two different energy-storage systems for the purpose of propelling the vehicle.
