Chapter VI. Placement of Vehicles on the Carriageway

51. The number of traffic lanes for trackless vehicles is determined by road markings or by signs 5.15.1 "Directions of movement by lanes", 5.15.2 "Directions of movement by lane", 5.15.7 "Direction of movement by lanes" and 5.15.8 "Number of lanes", and if these are absent—by drivers themselves, taking into account the width of the carriageway, the overall dimensions of vehicles and (or) the necessary side clearance between them.

52. On two-way roads, in the absence of road markings, the left half of the carriageway is considered to be the side intended for oncoming traffic, not counting widenings of the carriageway (acceleration and deceleration lanes, areas widened for stops of public transport vehicles, etc.).

53. On two-way roads with four or more lanes, it is prohibited to enter the side of the road intended for oncoming traffic.

54. On two-way roads with three marked lanes (with the exception of marking 1.9), of which the middle lane is used for movement in both directions, entering that lane is permitted only for the purpose of overtaking, bypassing an obstacle, a left turn or a U-turn. It is prohibited to enter the left edge lane, which is intended only for oncoming traffic.

55. Outside built-up areas, as well as within built-up areas—on roads marked with signs 5.1 "Motorway" or 5.3 "Road for motor vehicles", or where movement is permitted at a speed exceeding 80 km/h—drivers must keep their vehicles as close as possible to the right edge of the carriageway. In these cases, it is prohibited to occupy left-hand lanes when right-hand lanes are free.

56. Within built-up areas, taking into account the requirements of part 8 of Article 24 of the Law of the Republic of Armenia "On Ensuring Road Traffic Safety" and the requirements of points 55, 57—58 and 116 of the Rules, drivers of vehicles may move in the lane convenient for them. During heavy traffic, when all lanes are occupied, drivers may change lanes only before turning left or right, making a U-turn, bypassing an obstacle, or stopping.

57. On all roads, in the presence of three or more lanes for movement in the same direction, the far-left lane may be used only during heavy traffic when the other lanes are occupied, as well as when performing overtaking, a left turn or a U-turn; and for goods vehicles with a permissible maximum mass exceeding 3.5 t and for vehicles providing regular passenger transport services—only for performing a left turn or a U-turn. On one-way roads, entry into the left edge lane for the purpose of stopping or parking is carried out in accordance with the requirements of point 79 of the Rules.

58. Vehicles whose speed of movement must not exceed 40 km/h, or which for technical reasons cannot develop such a speed, must travel in the far-right lane, with the exception of cases of bypassing an obstacle, overtaking, or changing lanes before a left turn, a U-turn or, in permitted cases, stopping on the left side.

59. Movement along tram tracks of the same direction located on the left side of the carriageway at the same level is permitted, if all lanes in that direction are occupied, as well as during overtaking, bypassing an obstacle, a left turn or a U-turn—taking into account point 40 of the Rules. In this case, the tram must not be obstructed. If signs 5.15.1 "Directions of movement by lanes" or 5.15.2 "Directions of movement by lane" are placed before the intersection, movement along tram tracks at the intersection is prohibited. Movement along tram tracks of the oncoming direction is prohibited.

60. If the carriageway is divided into lanes by road markings, vehicles must travel within the marked lanes. Broken lines may be crossed only when changing lanes.

61. The movement of vehicles is prohibited along the shoulders, footways and footpaths, except when manoeuvring to park at the edge of the carriageway in the cases specified in point 81 of the Rules. In the absence of any other possibility, road and utility maintenance vehicles may travel there, and vehicles servicing commercial and other facilities located directly near the shoulders, footways or footpaths of the road—to approach them by the shortest route, without obstructing pedestrians and ensuring traffic safety.

62. The driver must maintain such a distance between his vehicle and the vehicle moving in front, and such a side clearance from those moving alongside, so that a collision with them can be avoided.

63. Outside built-up areas, on two-way roads with one lane for each direction, drivers of vehicles with a speed restriction or with a length exceeding 7 m must maintain sufficient distance from the vehicle ahead to allow overtaking drivers, when necessary, to return to their previous lane without obstruction. This requirement does not apply on road sections where overtaking is prohibited, as well as during intense traffic and when moving in an organized vehicle convoy.

64. On a two-way road, in the absence of a median strip, pedestrian refuge islands, bollards, and elements of road structures (the support pillars of bridges, overpasses, etc.) located on the carriageway must be bypassed by the driver on the right side, unless signs and road markings prescribe otherwise.
